Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space wood stove is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and ammunition sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.
What are the abundant types of space heaters?
- Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the local air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a effulgent heater is quiet and will use very little power.
- Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or clay pots heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a uncomfortable- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
- Convection heaters draw arctic air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection range is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized dwelling, but also can be noisy.
- Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, grade heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are unusually quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.
Should I buy an electric or a combustion example?
If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a individual room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, expected gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on user-friendliness and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on extended car trips.
How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Element (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you miss:
- Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by crest.
- Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's upstanding.
Do space heaters cost a lot to act?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To confirm energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 estate heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a faked-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.
Are space heaters a fire venture?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure correct safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty anniversary card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safe keeping features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for criterion, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating domain a adverse is adequately enclosed within the unit.
Customer Reviews
Chilled through ChaserWe purchased this jotting as a chill chaser so we would not have to light our wall heater untill we had to. The temperature here is up and down, 40 one day and 75 the next. It works fair for the large area we have it in, a front room - dining room area. Its a little pricey but so far so well-founded. We have used it about a month.
No fan only role!
Next try on getting the info through. Amazon, this is important stuff since it's taken quite a bit of effort to conclude the issue, and then try to get the credit from the vendor.
As a heater, the unit seems to work great. But pay attention...there is no "fan only" scenery as advertised!!!
guy review
the temperature gage on this consequence cant be used unless you put it in maximum 1500. if you want to put it in 900 mode you cant regulate the temperature. also when you coil it off and turn if back on instead of being in low it is in high. so if the electricity goes out in the middle of the night i would have to reset it to low. i invent it should be able to maneuver more easily and it doesnt. i was very disappointed.
Excellent
This oil-burning stove works very well. I don't need a "fan only" setting in the winter (see previous review). Anyway, I bought it for an uninsulated roof space bedroom about 16x12. Keeps the room warm, runs quietly, and doesn't have a discernible effect on the electric bill. The remote control adds to the convenience. If you buy something else, be sure it has remote.
Zealous heater, but no FAN-ONLY mode
Though the industrial details (both here & on the manufacturer's site) refer to the existance of a fan-only mode (along with high & low heat), the section actually does not have such a thing. Correspondance with Air King directly has confirmed this fact, by responding "I receipt [sic] with our engineers and this model does not have a fan only option."
Seems like a great heater though.
