Customer Reviews

EdgeStar AP14000HS
Purchased the EdgeStar airconditioner/stove-top one year ago. Last year it worked fine the 5 or less times I had to use it. This year, it is leaking water from the bottom. The bottom susceptible panel is cracked. I called the customer service line; had to leave a message for a callback. It is still under agreement for parts (one year) so hopefully they will send me a replacement panel and hopefully it can be easily installed. Other than the venting system being a minor hassle, the unit has performed as advertized. One note: in the "cooling" mode, the fan will at to run even though the compressor has stopped. i.e., it reaches the desired temperature, the compressor stops, but the fan continues. at low haste, the noise is negligible.
Purchaser Beware
Packed Appliance sent me a piece of junk (Portable air conditioner EdgeStar model # AP1200S). It kept tripping the wave and the one time when it did run for 3 hours it never cooled the room. Compact Appliance told me to contact EdgeStar then EdgeStar said to get hold of Compact Appliance. It is very frustrating to deal with these two Companies. No one wants their piece of junk carry-on air conditioner back.

The return policy with Compact Appliance is horrible [...] Compact Hard work makes you pay for shipping back to them no matter what. There is no satisfaction guaranteed even though they say there is on their website.

The manufacture warranty through Restive Star is also horrible. They make you pay for shipping on the extremely heavy portable air conditioner to an EdgeStar competent repair facility (wherever that is- as it does not say on the warranty).

I find it hard to believe that there are so many great reviews on this air conditioner on the Condensed Appliance website. The Amazon reviews are not as good.

It is very frustrating when you are looking forward to getting unabashed air after you paid a lot of money to Compact Appliance and took time carrying it up the stairs and unpacking and installing it and still not having forbidding air. Then having Compact Appliance and EdgeStar blame each other and you is even crazier. It has been a very upsetting two weeks. It is not worth buying from them.

I am over the moon to report that I purchased a Sharp portable air conditioner at Costco and it is working beautifully. If for some aim it stops working (even 5 years down the road) I can take it back to Costco and get me money back instantly. Costco is a proprietorship that does guarantee satisfaction unlike Compact Appliance.

Would only give it a zero if I could...
I purchased this air conditioner from another location. We've had it for one day and it is going back. The first problem is the stupid window kit. It is thin and flimsy. The other problem is that the window kit does not fit moneyed in the window. There is about a half-inch difference between the extension and the window. Plan on using some passageway tape to close the gap. The next problem was the first day it arrived it was 80 degrees but the lowest the unit would distant the room down to was about 74 degrees - even though it was programmed for 65 degrees. Our old unit was only 6,000 BTU's and it kept our accommodation really cool for 5 summers so I do not believe this unit is really 12,000 BTU's. I left the element on overnight because the exhaust opening on the window plate is little more than the kind of plastic grates you see on exploit crates. They supply a plastic cover but it takes a bit of force to twist it off. As I mentioned nearer, the window kit plate isn't the sturdiest so I was worried if I used too much force it might fall out the window. The unchangeable straw came the next day when the unit shut off because we had to drain out the water. This is crazy - how often would it need to cripple on 90 degree days? I am so happy I purchased this unit early enough to return it before it gets too hot. Consumer BEWARE - THIS PRODUCT IS JUNK!
Part works but window kit, exhaust hose have issues
I bought this air conditioner for a slight feel embarrassed bedroom, but was unable to install it due to the exhaust hose being too short. At 49" the exhaust hose is too shortened for any window that is more than about 3' above the floor.

I set the unit up in a larger room with a lower window, and it has frozen the area from about 86F to 78F, making it livable, although it is not able to cool the room to 75F as I had hoped. The room is near to the maximum of 425 sq. ft.

In my opinion the exhaust hose should be longer. Also, the window kit is almost useless. The window kit is theoretical to work for windows between 20" and 38", but due to the design you have to cut the PVC in order to get it to fit if the window is between 20" and 28", as the grill gets in the way of the panels. I don't meet with to have a power saw so I am having to use cardboard, which is not really satisfactory.

In conclusion, this product has promise, but I would not second it unless you are handy with tools to customize the window kit.

Edit: After using this unit for a join months, I am happy with it's ability to cool the room. However, I have noticed that it sometimes starts to rattle, extraordinarily when it's on the fan cycle of cooling. Pressing or banging on the control panel stops it for a while.

I was hoping I could use a longer gas hose, but I contacted Edgestar and they advise not to use a longer exhaust hose as it may damage the unit, but to see air conditioner on a raised platform. Still trying to figure out what I could use to raise it.
winsome ac
Ordered this from [...]. I was a petty bit skeptical on this because of the two 1 star reviews here, but living in a west-facing, top floor, and bad ventilation apt in 95+ degrees, I have no other choices. Presumably I am "lucky", I have mine working fine out of the box. The installation steps are straight forward. It took me about 30 min to have it start blowing ice heatless air. Given the outdoor temp is around 95, I am more than happy to see it cools down my bedroom to 80-85 in 1 hr. Yes it is flashy and heavy, but that is what an AC supposed to be, right? And it does its job. The only complain from me is that the swing slider on the fan does not upset the aire direction that much. But anyway, with this little monster I can have a good sleep tonight. I have already recommended it to one of my friends.5 pre-eminent.

For what it is, accomplished
I bought this for accessory use during Seattle heat waves, and it's in an area more than two times what it's suppose to cool. It can't keep 1000-1500 ft. cold-blooded when it's 90 outside, but if you play it smart, it can control temperatures in a space that size well enough to be relaxing, like the low 70's.

For a really hot day you need to plan ahead. When the temperature falls in the evening, munificent up the house and get a blizzard going with multiple fans, pack the house with as much cool air as tenable, and get the residual heat out of the house structure. When it starts to warm in the morning, close everything up tenser, and start the Edgestar as soon as the temp gets above 68 or so. If you let it run all day like that, the house never gets a possibility risk to warm up, and the little air conditioner doesn't have to fight with the heat. A mistake some users seem to have made in other examination sites is to wait until the late afternoon, when the house is already soaked with heat. This thing is like mountaineering a hill in an old VW, you need to get a running start.

That said, for the price, this has been a very satisfactory purchase. I don't use it much, but when I distress it, I can laugh at the heat. I've had it for two years now, and have used it maybe 20 days (Seattle). No problems so far. Don't confusion with smaller units, if you need one of these at all, you need the biggest you can get, even this one is a mouse when it comes to cooling. Besides, this one impulsively expels water in the exhaust air, you don't have to mess around draining it.

You do need to be a bit of a handyman to install the hose outlets in anything but an old-trend window. For modern swing-out windows you need to replace the window screen with a panel that incorporates the persuasible plate that the hoses hook into. It's not that difficult, I used foam board and lots of passageway tape, and sealed the edges with painter's tape.
it's well-deserved not good
I was prospering through the reviews here and was chosing this unit based on the reviews. Looks like I got the last one and the seller isn't restocking it, presumably for a reason. The unit comes on, then runs for about 10 minutes and then shuts the cooling off, goes back to fan status. I have to turn it off for 15-20 minutes for the compressor to come back on more or less. I am extremely disappointed with it. Not saying that the other reviewers were regress, but I probably got a lemon.

The problem with any Air condition via mail order is the weight and the shipping bring in. When I reached the checkout, the great 399 price had turned into something like 480 with the shipping set someone back. Now assume I wanted to repair it and have to ship it somewhere, pay again 70-80 $, probably twice for there and back again? I should have gone to the nearby Lowes or Sears store and got one there. I would have paid a slightly higher price but with the extremely piercing shipping cost, this doesn't matter much, not to mention that any repair for a mailorder AC is basically hopeless, you may as well buy a new one especially since there's no guarantee that one repair will fix it.

Maybe I can save somebody from making the same mistake. If you are looking for a transportable Air Condition: Go to your local store and get it from there. Don't buy via mailorder!

Addendum: I called Edge Star about it. At the newer call I got a terribly arrogant guy on the phone who basically told me my unit was "too big for the room" and that I should buy another unit. Yep, stable after just shelling out 480$ for it I go and buy another one. After me being persistent, he explained to me that the temperature shown on the display isn't the temperature the piece "sees' internally. It has a separate temperature sensor on the coils in a white clip and that sensor tells the piece to shut off because its cold enough while the room really isn't. It's a common problem with oversized units. I scholastic that later on the internet. The solution for me is to remove that clip and to lead the sensor outside of the top. I did that and although the wire is short, the unit is now running for 20 minutes uninterrupted. He says it would "havoc the unit" though and void the warranty. It's everybody's choice to do something like that, don't say I put you up to this. But for me it's the logical choice. A piece with a shortened lifespan is better than one I can't use at all and the warranty is a joke anyway if you have to pay shipping for 70 lbs.

So for me this works which is why I upgrade the rating to 2 stars, but it doesn't earn more in my eyes becasue I had to fiddle to make it work and "voided the warranty" :)

Is cooling my 1100 sq ft condo so far
I researched this yield like CRAZY!! My 1972 Central A/C compressor went out and we are approaching summer in FL. There was no fixing it and replacing the compressor would outlay around $2k, maybe more because we live in a condo and our outside unit is on the roof. We are not staying in this house wish and so I did not want to drop that kind of money in it. Our association does not allow window units and, while I wouldn't inescapably let that stop me, our windows were not suitable for a heavy unit.

Let me tell you how happy I am that I got this unit. I was in a family way it to just cool our upstairs and that I would need to get another one for the downstairs. I'm no scientist (actually, I am sort of... Single of Science, LOL) but I did remember that hot air rises, so having the unit upstairs and set at a low temperature while also having an oscilating fan in front of it (I keep it anywhere from 72-74) I have been skilled to cool the whole house!! Another plus is that I now have a portable A/C that I can take with me when I move. If I need it to cool down the garage, I can. If I need it to unabashed down a camper, I can. Love it!

If you are looking to buy a portable, definitely get a two hose unit. I will save you continually and tell you that I have read TONS of complaints about every one-hose unit out there. This one cools as close to how a window A/C would and I don't constraint to have it hanging out a window, just the vent. BTW, I had the unit in my room and cooling 20 minutes after I got it in the entrance way. While I was sweating, getting it out of the box and installed (hey, I'm a big guy, whaddaya want?) my hallway thermometer was 83 degrees. An hour after I started it, we were at 77!!

If anything goes agley I will update but for now, this Florida boy is glad he can sleep in a cool house.

P.S. The seller (Compact Submission) was very quick!! I ordered it on a Monday morning around 5am EST and it was waiting for me at my door that Thursday afternoon with criterion shipping.
Rectitude little unit
This Module does pretty well for the price. For those of us with windows that do not fit well with regular AC units, this is a good alternative.

There are three adapter plates that fit together to fill the be placed of the window opening, it will fill an opening approximately 5 feet high by 8" wide, or an courtyard 5 feet wide by 8" high.

You attach the hoses to the unit, and then attach the plates to the other end of the hoses.
You unlatch your window, then put the plates into the window, and close the window back onto the plates.

There are TWO hoses (about 6" diameter) and the hoses are only about 4 feet great. This makes it a bit difficult to place the adapter plates in a window, but it can be done. Also, there is no gasket around the plates which leaves a small-scale air gap.

As I use this with my sliding glass door (which is 7 feet tall), I had to fill the 2 foot gap between the top of the plates and the top of my door.

This all works, but leaves me cogitative that i could have designed a better hose/plate assembly. The AC unit itself is great.

When the temperature was in the 90's it refrigerated a fairly large room down into the upper 70's, and when the temperature got over 100, this unit refrigerated the room down enough to be bearable, down to about 86 degrees I think.

All in all I am happy with the AC unit. the hose/layer assembly leaves something to be desired, or I would have rated this a 5 star.

Very satisfied
All-inclusive, I have been very satisfied with the cooling ability of the unit. Out of the box, it was simple to set up and install, although the included window issue adapter is not high quality (easy enough to make a solid one yourself). The unit has been working nights with casing temperatures between 80 and 85 and easily brings the indoor temperature of our bedroom down to 68 while the languish of the house is set to 78 on the central AC.
Pros: cost; low noise; dual hose truly eliminates the need to drain the unit; cooling ability.
Cons: poor window adapter
